Rooted in Ward 8: Lytoni Brown-Beckham Builds Community Through Service

For Lytoni Brown-Beckham, Ward 8 is more than a neighborhood—it is home, purpose, and legacy. Long before the title “Network Weaver” existed, Lytoni was already doing the work of weaving by connecting neighbors through her nonprofit, Speak Into The Light, uplifting youth through her facilitation of the Don’t Be Rude program in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Cleveland, and strengthening community ties through acts of service that support green spaces and youth development. Her main focus is workforce development and community resilience. She organizes Garden Block Club monthly meetings for youth in Ward 8, as well as Neighbor-to-Neighbor Stewardship gatherings that create discussions around community uplift and neighborhood impact. To put it plainly, Beckham is a network weaver powered by cultivating grassroots initiatives.
Where It Began…
Lytoni moved to Ward 8 in 2008 at just 23 years old with her five-year-old daughter in tow, settling on Linwood Avenue as a young mother determined to create stability for her family. As a new homeowner in Ward 8, many of her rel atives in Buckeye-Woodhill tried to deter her. But in the midst of uncertainty, she stayed grounded and found true promise in Ward 8.
She found something just as valuable: community. Neighbors showed her what pride of place looked like—maintaining homes, caring for their blocks, and investing in one another. Brick by brick, her community banded together not only to help whip her house into shape, but to teach young Lytoni how to sustain herself on her path to homeownership. That experience deepened her commitment to the area.
Let’s Get Into the Weaving
At just 18, Lytoni published her first book. Today, she has four books under her belt. That early passion for writing led her to create her first business, Speak Into The Light Publishing, a company that has helped bring more than 100 testimonies to life.
Another turning point came when she enrolled her daughter, Ayanna, in the Pathways After School Program at The City Mission. Through that experience, Lytoni built relationships with fellow single mothers and expanded a network of community connections that sparked a greater vision.
Wanting to give back to Ward 8 just as it had given to her, she transformed that vision into service by officially registering Speak Into The Light as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Over the last 18 years, Speak Into The Light has helped residents navigate resources, supported single mothers, and mentored young people.
For Lytoni, motherhood is the impetus behind her advocacy, her service, and her commitment to creating change.Lytoni Brown-Beckham is pictured above with her husband, Curtis, and their children, Ayanna and Ezekiel. What her children and family have always known to be true about her is reflected in the impact she has made throughout the community. Through the years, she has built a trusted and reliable voice through Garden Block Club monthly meetings and Neighbor-to-Neighbor outreach. Simply put, she has mastered helping residents turn ideas into action. Her stewardship can be felt across Ward 8, where residents know they have someone willing to listen, advocate, and organize for progress that includes everyone. “I want residents to be present in the decisions being made about our community,” Lytoni says. “Growth should happen with us, not around us.” With leaders like Lytoni Brown-Beckham rooted in service, Ward 8’s future remains in caring and capable hands.
