New & Good is simply a moment at the beginning of a gathering or conversation for individuals to share brief nuggets about what is going well or what is new.
By sharing positive stories and experiences at the beginning of a conversation, it brings appreciation, opportunity and a sense of well being into the environment. This prepares everyone for cooperation and teamwork.
How does it work?
New & Good can be a formal exercise or a casual habit. If you’re facilitating a gathering and want to use New & Good, invite individuals to sit in a circle. Introduce the exercise and ask members to share something that is new or something that is good. If there is enough time, everyone can briefly share their new and good nuggets. When there is a large group, or if there is not enough time, you can opt to allow a set amount of time to share. For example, “Let’s take about 5 minutes to share anything that is new or good.” You can start by sharing your own example of something that is new or good for you.
It does not have to be a big event; it just has to be recent and positive. Example: “I started a new project at work, and I’m really excited about it!”
In a casual setting, New & Good can be as simple as starting a conversation by saying, “What’s new or good for you?”
