Come spend an evening with Edmonia Lewis (circa 1844-1911), an African/Native-American sculptor brought to life by Sherrie Tolliver.
Sherrie Tolliver is a local comedian, cultural history interpreter and actress. Her favorite characters are “the ones who have overcome great obstacles” such as Rosa Parks, Wilma Rudolph, Edmonia Lewis and other black women in our history. She has made these women come alive in various venues throughout the greater Cleveland area and across the country.
Edmonia Lewis was an African/Native-American sculptor from New York that studied at Oberlin College. Being the first woman let alone African American Sculptor proved to be a political struggle in America, so most of her career was spent in Rome. Ms. Lewis had fought through all the pitfalls to produce some acclaimed work such as: The bust of Col. Robert Shaw of the Colored 54th Regiment, many pieces on Native American Life and her “politically correct” marble sculptor Being Cleopatra.
